Certificate versus diploma: what IFGR certification actually guarantees

The vocabulary of professional qualifications can be a source of genuine confusion. Certificates, diplomas, attestations, labels: these terms circulate freely in the training market, each with different implications in terms of what they attest to, how they are recognised and what value they carry for an employer or client. Clarity on these distinctions is important for any candidate making an investment in their professional development.

A diploma, in the French sense, refers to a qualification registered in the national directory of professional certifications: the Repertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles, or RNCP, and awarded following a process that typically includes formal assessment by a jury. It is linked to a defined professional qualification level and carries a recognised standing in the labour market.

A professional certificate, by contrast, attests to the acquisition of a defined set of competencies within a more specific perimeter. It may or may not be registered in national directories, and its value in the market depends significantly on the credibility of the issuing body, the rigour of the assessment process and the recognition it has built among employers. A certificate issued by a well-regarded institution with demanding standards can carry considerable weight.

IFGR issues certifications that attest to the completion of a structured training pathway and the demonstrated mastery of the competencies it covers. They are backed by a coherent pedagogical framework and a defined assessment process. The IFGR diploma is a private certification, issued by the Institute. It is neither a State diploma nor a title registered in the RNCP or the Répertoire spécifique. IFGR does not hold the Qualiopi certification: this quality certification is being considered; it has not been initiated to date (no audit scheduled).
